United Way Volunteer Recognition Event

Here I am at the United Way Minority Volunteer Recognition breakfast held in the 500 ballroom in the Indiana Convention Center on July 19, 2008. I was both Honored and humbled to be recognized for my twenty years as a volunteer Youth Basketball coach at the Burello Family Center. They have a strong comprehensive youth program and a wonderful staff headed by Lynda Burello. She thinks of the kids first, last and always. It has been my distinct pleasure to be a small part of that program over the years!

NPR : Devra Davis: Chemicals, Cancer and You

NPR : Devra Davis: Chemicals, Cancer and You
As I was reading an Indianapolis newspaper article on the Millions being donated to a cancer facility by a local football star, I wondered how much of that millions would actually be devoted to finding the actual cause of cancer. I wondered how much would go to brick and mortar; to salaries etc, etc. further I thought about technology, food, chemicals other sundry items in use today as possible causes; and the seemingly lack of concern of the cancer research community going for total eradification of cancer. And just as these thoughts were going through my head this report came on the radio. The show is entitled " Fresh Air", hosted by Terry Gross in an engaging interview with Devra Davis discussing the very concerns I had just pondered. Please give a listen to this very enlightening piece.

Getting on with the forgiveness process

Perhaps it was divine intervention that Vivian Springer was the Rutgers Women's Basketball team coach at this point in time. This was the first time that the Rutgers Women's basketball team had ever reached the Women's Basketball Tournament finals. And under Mrs. Springer's tutelage they achieved a lofty goal to be celebrated for all times. Her deportment, her grace, her dignity and class was in my estimation far and above all of the ranting and raving of the (who asked you) spokespersons addressing the Imus situation. To quote Mrs. Don Imus upon meeting with the Rutgers Women Basketball Team, "they were courageous and beautiful women".
Although, Mr. Imus is off the airwaves, we must not bury our heads in the sands of complacency but we must hold all of those on our airwaves to the same standard by not allowing hurtful, degrading remarks to be spoken by any one White or black. Let's not preach to the choir, but lets understand that this behavior as a standard is still out there.
